Google Assistant crashes for Android Auto users

Problems have started to appear in Android Auto's AI Assistant as users have reported a similar error across multiple versions.

Reports flooding Google's community forums involve the Assistant continually responding with “Oops, something went wrong” when asked to do something (via 9to5Google). The issue has been reported since late January, with users struggling to find a cure. One user said they turned on all permissions and even checked the voice assistant to see if it worked – and it did.

Others stated that this problem appeared after upgrading to the latest version 11.1.6, with another version supposedly running 11.2. Another report states that pressing the Assistant button causes the error to appear. Interestingly, the user said he could hear text messages, but Google Maps no longer audibly directed them while driving. Hands-free calling also appears to be inoperable.

Very little appears to be working as one user has gone through several tricks. Restarting the car's display system and phone didn't offer much relief, nor did deleting the cache. The user installed Android Auto 11.3 beta, but the error still occurred.

Google appears to be aware of the issue, as a member of its Android Auto team has started asking users for specific details about their systems.

What's more, reports of Google Assistant issues in Android Auto have closely followed the AI UI redesign on the platform. The digital helper has had its elements moved to the bottom of your car screen, covering your row of widgets as it waits to transcribe your words for text messages and more. It's unlikely the redesign is to blame, especially considering how it isn't affecting all Android Auto user.

Google Assistant had similar issues with Android Auto after the Android 13 update, which broke the “Hey Google” wake command. One trick to resolve the issue was to hold down the Assistant button, but interacting with that doesn't seem to be working this time.

Elsewhere, Samsung's Galaxy S24 series is already having issues with Android Auto. Users with any of the latest devices are unable to connect to their car's automotive systems. However, car brand manufacturers are working on a solution.
